Brazil celebrates its independence day every September 7. The country pays tribute to the Brazilian culture, history, symbols, origins and national flag. The flag of Brazil is a familiar sight to many around the world. It features a green field with a big yellow rhombus in the middle. There is a blue circle inside the rhombus with five stars and a curved white band through it. The Brazilian flag is actually one of the few country flags that do not show any black and red colors, representing war and bloodshed.
The current flag was officially adopted by the government on November 19, 1889. The design was made by Raimundo Mendes. The new national flag and symbol has stayed the same throughout the years, although a few changes have been made along the way.
Regarding the Brazilian flag’s background, Ruy Barbosa, a lawyer and newly appointed Minister of Finances of the First Republic, proposed that a new national flag be made. He was influenced by the design of the United States banner.

The new flag of Brazil was actually taken from the design of the flag of the old Brazilian Empire. The green background stands for the lush forests. The yellow rhombus represents the minerals that the country is rich in. the blue circle replaced the old coat of arms of the original banner and stands for the sky over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of November 15, 1889. It was on that day that the Republic of Brazil was declared.
