General Washington lifted the first union flag to represent the United Colonies at Prospect Hill. The original flag is also known as the Cambridge flag or the Grand Union flag. In the journals of the Continental Congress, the initial evidence of the flag of the United States being described can be found. It showed that there was a resolution on June 14, 1777. The flag of the U.S. was described as having 13 alternating red and white stripes and the union containing 13 stars. The stars were white against a blue field to represent a new constellation. The description was only published in local newspapers in September 1777. During the first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the galleys and ships in the river were decorated to gather and feature the United States flag.
