The United States of America is one of the most powerful countries in the world. When people view the American flag, they will instantly think of dominance and state-of-the-art technology. The country flag features the red, blue and white colors and stars and stripes. These represent the heroes in the past who shaped the nation. The symbols are also indicative of the pride and patriotism that people have whenever they raise the banner.

When it comes to the pattern and style of the United States flag, you will see a small rectangle on the upper left portion of the banner. It contains five white stars. There are also 13 alternating red and white stripes on the inner rectangle. These represent the colonies who fought the Europeans and finally seize control over the country so that America will be a free country. People should always remember the time when Americans fought for freedom centuries ago.

The United States flag is usually featured by people in other places like schools, offices and homes. There are also other items that showcase the American flag, such as shirts, hats, caps and badges. Many of these are displayed during national holidays like Independence Day and Flag Day. There are also plenty of events where these miniature flags are shown. Flags are found all over the country especially during these national events. Children and adults like to wave miniature flags from their positions while watching concerts and parades. Some of the flags are displayed all-year-round to constantly remind people about their sense of nationalism.

April 14, 1865 will forever be remembered as a sad day for the United States. The events at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC on that fateful night would forever change history.
The “Lincoln Flag” was borne after the death of President Abraham Lincoln. It was actually the U.S. Flag which only had 36 stars at the time, which was placed as a front bunting on the State Box at the theater from where Lincoln was watching.
John Wilkes Booth was Lincoln’s assassin. He shot the president from the back using his derringer. The president was severely wounded on the head so the flag was quickly taken to be folded. It was where the president rest his bleeding head before he died minutes later.

Many American citizens do not realize that the United States flag used to come by a different name, decades ago. Before, the US flag was called Old Glory. The banner was actually called such by Captain William Driver, a sea voyager from the United States. William’s flag was the first one known to be the Old Glory and has become one of the most important artifacts in the history of the great country.
The Old Glory was created by William’s mother plus some women from Massachusetts. William’s mother gave him the flag sometime in 1820. The original flag measure about 10 x 17 square feet which was quite large. It was also set up on top of heavy metal when William explored the ocean on his ship.
The flag at that time had 24 stars, which stood for the nautical setting. There was a tiny anchor positioned at one corner of the blue area of the flag.
Upon receiving the flag, William took good care of it and he displayed the flag wherever he went. He would put it on top of the mast on his ship Charles Doggett. The flag was seen by many in 1831 when William went to many destinations around the world.

The Old Glory was the flag raised by Driver during his sea trips. Over time, the sun and rain hammered on the flag so when you see the original flag today, there are patches were the repairs were made after his voyages.
