During the Declaration of Independence of the United States on July 4, 1776, The United States of America had still no official flag. The Grand Union Flag was considered to be the first national flag of the United States.

Though it was never official during the first course of their independence, it became their official world flag. The Grand Union Flag, with continental colors, was used by George Washington and was used all throughout the American Revolutionary War and has thus been the basis for the design of the very first official United States flag. The Grand Union Flag had the same colors as the current world flag of the United States of America, but it had 9 to 13 stripes, and at that time, the flag was not allowed to be flown outside of the Indian Ocean. Also, instead of the 50 stars that would resemble the 50 states of the United States, the Grand Union Flag had white stripes that had been added to a British Red Ensign Flag, wherein this flag has been commonly used all throughout Britain and its colonies.

Today, the United States of America has its flag as one of the nation's most widely recognized symbols and is also recognized all throughout the world. Within the country, this world flag is currently displayed all throughout public buildings and also in private residences.

I really don't know if this is legal but it is also used as decals for various objects such as bodies and frames of cars and other vehicles. It is also used as part of decorating many pieces of apparel like clothing and bags and can also be seen at various badges and label pins. The flag is not only used as a decoration to various objects but it is used in public discourse in order to refer the United States of America, as a nation state, a government, a set of policies and also a set of ideas and ideologies.
