Driving isn't as easy as it looks. There are a lot of things that you need to know before you can even sit in the driver's seat. The first thing that you have to do after you've learned everything about the car is to take it out for a spin. While you get to drive around a little, you aren't supposed to take it out on the road. You do it somewhere deserted or somewhere with very few people around. Once you get the feel for it, you will be asked to practice on an obstacle course with cones or feather flags. This is because you have to execute different kinds of turns in different situations. In other words, you need to learn to control your car.

If your instructor feels that you are ready for the open road, you can practice driving on the streets. The idea isn't to blend in with the sea of cars. You have to stand out because being a student driver merits consideration and respect from the other drivers on the street. You have to be in a marked car so that they don't get mad at you for running slow. That's why you might have a big sign or a car flag signifying that you are a student driver.
