The world flag is also known as an ensign. It often shows the national colors and symbols and rectangular in shape. The ratio of width and length is commonly at 1:2 or 2:5.It is ideal that the flag is positioned in the pole far from the stem and that it will not obstruct in the regular operations and mechanism of the vessel. The flag should be flown from the outer part of the mast on top of the gaff or leech is there is a boom near the stem.

The ensign must be flown from eight in the morning until the sun sets. The flag must be taken down the ship if you’re going off the vessel and will not return before sunset. The ensign must never be flown at night.

There are many ensigns showcase in different parts of the globe. In the United States, the Old Glory features the stars which represent the states and red and white stripes. The US Yacht flag shows one anchor encircled by the thirteen stars. IN the United Kingdom, the Union Jack features three red and white crosses with blue background. This is also utilized by warships. Recreational boaters on the other hand use a red flag with the Union Jack on the upper left part. In Canada, the flag of Canada features a widely known symbol Maple Leaf. The maple leaf is at the center with white background and two red vertical bands on both sides. It is also the ensign used by several Canadian vessels.
