Any true blue blooded American citizen ought to be proud to be represented by the American Flag. However, even handling of this piece of national pride has a set of rules to be followed in order to render full respect and acknowledgement. Here are the most common guidelines in the real American way of handling the national flag.
When publicly displaying the American flag, one has to make sure that the orientation and the manner in which the flag is hoisted denotes nothing but the highest regard. One of the most important etiquette pointers which is also considered as a nationalistic sense of pride is to maintain the stars at the upper left part when displayed horizontally. As for those who would like to hang the flags vertically, the stars should be placed on the top and right. Sounds confusing? You may start with the first position as horizontal, then do a clockwise quarter turn.
As for indoor use, such as ballrooms and auditoriums, one has to make sure that the American flag is properly oriented in placement, plus make sure that the whole flag is clearly visible and unobstructed to the general public. It would be such a shame on the part of the owner of the flag or establishment if the symbol of liberty and justice would be hidden away by some plants or some measly décor.

As for those who are thinking where to place the American flag during stage events, a rule of thumb would be to place the flag to the right of the podium wherever the speaker is located. That is the reason why the speaker is usually seen at the left side of the stage from the audience point of view. This allows the right side of the speaker to be near the edge of the stage for the flag to be unobstructed from view of the audience.
