Whenever possible, the American flag should be flown at the top of the
mast or pole. Otherwise known as being hoisted at full mast, the US
flag should always portray a high degree of nationalistic pride worthy
enough to instill high hopes and morale for its citizens. With the
stars and stripes gallantry swaying with the breeze, the national flag
is a reminder that the power and sovereign and the virtues which are
characteristic of this piece of revered cloth. Never should it be
given any signs of disrespect or negligence, or even be hung in ways
other than the recommended ones.

Even flying the flag at half mast should not be done unless for some
specific reasons such as for the bereavement of a loss of a national
hero or asset such as soldiers killed in fights. The half mast
signifies mourning for the part of the American sovereign for one of
its prized and valued asset in its citizenry just passed away. Even in
hoisting the flag at half mast requires an initial full mast raise
before being hoisted down slowly to a present half mast.

Another instance where the flag may be seen is during tragedies and
disasters, and where urgent major assistance is required. In this
case, it would be justifiable to fly an upside down flag, which would
show distress. Any other instance would be inappropriate and would be
downright disrespectful.

These are just some of the ways the American flag may be flown to
denote different states of being, without being disrespectful and
still retaining the identity of a great and proud nation.
