In the Indian Ocean lie about 9,000 islands flying the Maldives Flag. The archipelago is a popular destination for tourists, vacationers, and especially honeymooners who want to enjoy the jaw dropping beauty of the scenery in any of its resorts. Touted as one of the best destinations for beach resorts and water sports, the collective of islands are sure more than enough to take one’s breath away again and again.
An array of 26 atolls comprising of many wonders and world records in terms of geographic and demographic proportions are found here. For one, it is the country with the lowest average land elevation and the lowest peak as well. With only about a little over 7 feet above sea level, this island nation has been in constant speculations with the progressive rise in global sea levels. Nevertheless, this country is not without a rich cultural heritage.
One of the better known locations for tourists is the Grand Friday Mosque. Being the largest mosque in the archipelago built by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar at around 1656, it is the landmark of the locked Islam religion for the population. Even if Buddhism was around earlier, the influence of Islam was cemented until the present. It is characterized with the golden dome with elaborate etches and carvings of Islamic calligraphy. Furthermore, this grand mosque, in contrast to the tiny islands of Maldives (the largest just a few square kilometers across) could accommodate a whopping 5,000 worshippers.

Another highlight is the Mulee Aage which served as the former presidential palace of the president. Situated across the Grand Friday mosque, it is a testament to the splendor of Maldives.
