Developing the art of self-defense or commonly known as martial arts is considered an ancient story because it took hundreds of years to perfect it. In Japan, it was the commoners like the farmers who started self-defense because during the old times, only the samurais were allowed to use weapons. The rest of the citizens must only learn to fight without those. It took years to discover the right way of punching, kicking, jumping or throwing regular or simple things such as sticks to make the movement effective enough to defend themselves.
In Korea, royal tomb drawings were discovered in 1935 that showed empty-handed combats. Experts say that the drawings were made between 3 and 327 AD. This was the time wherein self-defense techniques were part of military trainings as well as one of the highlighted tournament activities in festivities in villages. Then the Buddhist monks taught about martial arts and incorporated spiritual aspects. Through time the empty-handed combat was banned in Korea which led to some techniques to be left unknown. After that Korean martial arts were overshadowed by the influence of the techniques from China and Japan.
However, this did not completely put a halt in the development of Korean martial arts. Some of the Korean techniques were developed and incorporated to improve what were learned from China and Japan. In a way, China and Japan contributed to the evolution of Korean martial arts that are known today.

Upon entering a dojang, or Korean Martial Arts Training Hall, the custom flag of martial arts hung on the walls. It is a practice to take a bow to the flags before proceeding to the rest of the training hall and before facing the instructor to show respect.
