People play various roles during the season of carnival in Brazil. Aside from being the flag-bearer, some individuals take on the task of being the mestre-sala. Some people are very dedicated to the performance and will spend a lot of time, money and effort to ensure that they feature a presentation worth remembering. Some of the people you will watch at Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have actually been performing the samba for one or two decades. Many of these locals learned the dance and unique moves from their own parents, who were also carnaval and samba performers in Brazil during their time. Couples learn and master the movies with the main goal of becoming the premier performers. There are 12 very important samba schools in Rio de Janeiro and being given a task during the parades is truly an honor for them.

At present, there are plenty of professionals and educators that focus on the Brazilian Carnival. The choreography may differ but the base moves and influences are generally the same. Over time, performers add their own unique style based on their personal skills and preference.
In some big samba school parades, there may be as many as three couples representing each school. A panel of judges will also be ready to rate and classify the best couples. Ultimately, a “first couple” will be selected from the bunch. The second and third couples will also have special parts in the program. Although majority of the performers will not win the overall title, some of them continue to practice and hone their skills to one day attain the ultimate award.

Plenty of flag-bearers at present are actually descendants of the original flag-bearers of the first Brazilian Carnaval.
