Located between the two peaks of the Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl volcanoes is Mexico City. It is one of the proudest cities in the world but still features several aspects of its colonial past. When you walk around the city, you will notice Baroque-style buildings and other Latin-American structures. The landscape is also beautiful which is why it is frequented by tourists every year.
Mexico City may be polluted but its Federal District continues to bring more tourists in. There are 400 neighborhoods and 16 districts in the place and the streets are named after world-renowned philosophers, writers, rivers and European cities. People who like to have a taste of the old will definitely enjoy the place.
In the middle of Centro Historico or the Historic Center is the Plaza de la Constitucion. It is also called Zocalo by the locals, which means pedestal. The structure is actually a monument that commemorates the Mexicans’ independence from Spanish rule during the turn of the 19th century and can rival some of the best landmarks in the world. Every night, the Mexican Army celebrates in the square and the fold the Mexican flag which is raised again during daytime.
There are other tourist attractions in the city such as the Catedral Metropolitana. It is situated on the north end of the square, showing a variety of great styles like Baroque, Gothic and Neo-Classical. The Great Temple or Aztec Templo Mayor is found on the east part of the cathedral. There is also a museum nearby that shows a variety of ancient artifacts. The National Palace is found at the east end of the Zocalo, keeping old paintings. The President of Mexico also stays there.
