The United Kingdom allows its residents leeway when it comes to costumes, so there is no official dress code. In Scotland, a kilt is the national attire. In Wales, the national dress is a long skirt, petticoat and shawl. Some of the practices and customs about attire are linked with certain individuals such as the Beefeater, the Queen’s Guard and other recognized persons. The traditional English costume may refer to the attire worn for the May dance or Morris dance.
Majority of British literature is in English. However, there are some forms of literature that are written in Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish, Jerriais, Latin and other native UK languages. United Kingdom is where a lot of poets and authors are based. Some of them have made waves worldwide such as Lord Byron, George Bernard Shaw, William Wordsworth, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and William Blake, among others.
Long Sword, Morris dance, May dance or Rapper Sword dance are among the folk dances in England. The Strathpeys is included in the customary dances in Scotland.
In classical music, the United Kingdom is also well known for people like Wiliam Byrd, John Taverner, William Walton, Edward Elgar, Benjamin Britten and other local composers. The London Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra are also based in the United Kingdom. Some of the famous bands grew in London such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd.
