One of the best experiences you will have when celebrating New Year will be in New York City. The biggest event at the Big Apple at the end of the year will be when the giant ball drops in Times Square. You will find yourself with thousands others cheering and counting down to welcome the New Year. The ball will fall from the top of a high flagpole as fireworks and music play in the background.
The ball is very special. It is a geodesic sphere spanning two feet and is full of over 2,000 crystal triangles. It also has a weight of 11,875 pounds. The color palette features over 16 million hues and billions of patterns, making it one of the most attractive things you will ever see.
You have to plan first before visiting New York during the holidays or you might be overwhelmed by the Christmas rush. In December, the weather can drop to subzero so you have to prepare the right clothes and have sweaters and bonnets for the snow just in case. You should also stay warm by knowing where to go during certain times. Read on how you can travel from one part of the city to the next.
There are several other great things to find in New York City. You will realize that there are a few attractions that you should not miss during the holidays.
When you look at large display windows in downtown Manhattan, you will find various Christmas-themed setups that will make you want to shop. Some of these might feature Christmas elves or the nativity scene. There are also several fictional creations and winter wonderland displays featuring Santa Claus, Rudolph and other Christmas characters. It will be a very jolly time to walk around but always stay warm. You will also find some great displays at Santa Land creations at Macy’s Herald Square and Lord & Taylor. There is the Sleeping Beauty at Saks Fifth Avenue as well as dolls that dance and act with background music.
Visit the famous Empire State Building in New York City. It is one of the tallest structures in the world, measuring over 1,453 feet from the street up to the lightning rod. It will take 1,860 steps to reach the 102nd floor.
There are also a couple of observatories at the Empire State Building. The first is located on the 68th floor while the second is found on the 102nd floor. The first one is 1,050 feet high and will require you to take a high-speed elevator. It will only take several seconds before you get to the two observatories via elevator. On top, you will see powerful binoculars that will let you see various parts of the city.

Central Park is another must-visit place in New York City during the Christmas season. You have to try ice skating. Even if you have no experience, there are skating coaches who can teach you well. You can also rent ice skates and have a great time with friends. There are two ice skating rinks in Central Park – Wollman Rink and Lasker Rink.
