When a person is described as an alcoholic, he has no control when it comes to drinking alcoholic beverages. Alcoholics cannot survive a day without drinking an ounce of beer or liquor. The average person regards water as the most important drink of all. For alcoholics, they need a minimum of one glass of whiskey or a bottle of beer at least to feel normal. Alcoholism can be distinguished depending on the symptoms and presentation of a person.
The urge to drink
First of all, alcoholics always feel the need to drink beer or liquor. Regardless of the time of day, they need to drink alcohol and will exhibit adverse symptoms if they stop for 24 to 72 hours such as dizziness, nausea, chills, shakiness, anxiety and sweating. An alcoholic may initially deny that he has a drinking problem but it becomes clear that he has alcohol dependence when he always prefers alcohol over other types of drink to feel happy.
A person suffering from alcohol addiction can approach AA or Alcoholics Anonymous. It is a group that holds meetings regularly. Now, AA has groups all over the United States and the world, with members coming from different walks of life. These alcoholics talk about their situation and accept their current status together. They exchange stories and advice on how to completely get off the bad habit and stay sober for life. Members usually listen to each other’s tales on how they started to get dependent on alcohol and how they plan to change their lives using the 12-step course.
Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith are credited for creating Alcoholics Anonymous. The two also used to be alcoholics and became sober using the 12-step approach. AA has spread widely throughout the world by word of mouth. Now, there are millions of members in various parts of the globe using the 12-step program. A book is also available to guide people to sobriety.
