The American flag is one of the most important symbols of our nation, which is why it is only right that it is kept clean and in good condition always. Many people are actually unfamiliar with the process of caring for American flags. You can come across a few guidelines by reading old books or talking to people from the army or navy. One of the basic rules says that an old or torn flag must be lowered and disposed of properly by burning. Do not leave the flag hanging and exposed to the elements.
If a flag can no longer be fixed or improved, it should be disposed of in the traditional manner. The basic approach involves lowering the torn and tattered flag, then burning it away from the public eye. The method is similar to paying respects to the dead before they are buried underneath the ground. Some people still do not know how to get rid of an old flag the right way. Do not leave the banner in a trash bin or give it to someone. Worse, do not cut it up to be used as rags.

Burning the American flag can have two meanings. First, it can be a symbol of rebellion where protesters show their disdain for the government and its policies. They usually take the flag out on the streets then burn it. All of these are recorded on camera for the world to see their discontentment. On the other hand, burning the flag quietly is like bringing it to its final resting place.
