Pirate flags are described as both legendary and real. Centuries ago, real pirates traveled over the seas with their own captain and crew. Each pirate ship also featured its own pirate flag, with their own unique elements and designs.
The Jolly Roger pirate flag is one of the most popular. There were several variations of the flag. These were often seen aboard pirate ships especially during the age of exploration. Ships have to see friendly and pirate flags from afar so that they can steer clear of sea robbers and stay safe while moving from one continent to another.

Over time, pirates changed the way they designed their flags. Pirates may be criminals but they had their own set of rules and codes of conduct. Pirate flags were usually displayed to strike fear in the hearts of the crews of other vessels. The background was usually red or black, but black was more common. Red flags, however, came first before the black ones.
Red pirate flags stood for blood. These also meant that pirates would show no mercy to captured crew members. Black pirate flags became popular over time, symbolizing death. These were also raised on vessels carrying people who had serious illnesses or victims of plagues. The skull and crossbones were later added as well as hourglasses and swords. These also connoted that the crew of the opposing vessel were about to die.

Blackbeard’s flag is one of the most famous pirate flags. It had a skeleton with a spear piercing a heart.
