The Southern Cross is one of the most distinctive elements of the Australian flag. It was included during a flag design contest and is one of the most unique features of the banner. Whenever people view the Australian flag, they will immediately notice the cross and know that they are looking at the symbol of the land down under. The Southern Cross is comprised of five stars. There is a small star and four big ones. The appearance of the stars actually went through a number of adjustments through the years. Initially, the stars had five points then were changed to having nine points. The addition of points referred to the addition in brightness of the stars. However, many advised that it would be easier to make the flag if there were seven points only. The small flag would feature five points.
Another unique element on the flag of Australia is the Federation star. It is the big star of the Union banner. The star design also went through a number of changes through the decades. First, it had six points to stand for the six colonies that merged to form the country. In 1908, the star added another point to represent Papua. The flag now features seven points even though Papua has separated itself from Australia. Papua gained its independence in the year 1975.

Similar to flags around the world, the Australian flag has a lot of symbols and is rich in background. Many of the elements on the flag actually talks about the background of the nation.
