Spain is a beautiful country that is rich in culture and traditions. The national Spain’s flag is as colorful as its flag itself with its bright red and yellow colored stripes.
There is more to Spain’s flag than just its design and colors. The stripes are arranged horizontally. The yellow stripe, which is also the thicker stripe, is between two red stripes. The dimension of the flag has a height that is two-thirds of the width.
The only icon that is in the flag is the simple version of the coat-of-arms of Spain. It is seen inside the yellow field of the flag. In the coat-of-arms is the symbol of the royal seal between the Pillars of Hercules. The pillars represent Gibraltar and Ceuta. The red banners surrounding the pillars display a text in Latin, Plus Ultra that means “More Beyond” associating it to the discovery of the New World by Columbus’.
Between the pillars is a shield with four divisions. The divisions display a picture of a castle, a lion that’s wearing a crown, yellow and red stripes, chain mail, and three fleur-de-lis inside an oval located at the center if the shield. On top of the shield is an ornate crown in gold and red.
The flag of Spain seen today is the same flag design that was officially adopted on December 19, 1981. Prior to this design there was an eagle but it was removed. The color theme of golden-yellow and red was first used since the time of the King of Spain in 1700.
