On November 19, 1889, the flag of Brazil was founded. Decio Vilares is known as the official designer while the project was overseen by Raimundo Teixeira Mendes and Miguel Lemos. The national flag of Brazil is the second since the republic was proclaimed, the third since the independence of Brazil and the fourth since the Brazilian Federal Republic was formed. There are also other symbols associated with the country such as the official weapons, the state seal and the national anthem.
The flag featured in Brazil today has the green tone for its background. A yellow diamond with a blue circle within is located at the center of the banner. There are 27 white stars inside the blue circle too which constitutes the 27 states of the nation. There is a white stripe in the middle of the blue circle with the words “Ordem e Progresso” or “Order and Progess” stated.
In 1820, the imperial flag of the country was made by Jean Baptiste Debret, a French painter. The imperial flag was important in the creation of the present Brazilian flag because many of the elements included by Debret are still found on the present banner like the shapes and colors. In 1822, the act founding the national flag was officially signed.
The initial Brazilian flag retained the colors and shapes found in the old flag. The royal family was represented by the yellow and green tones. The green color stands for the House of Braganca, while the yellow color stands for the House of Habsburgo.
